Balloon Museum. Euphoяia - Art is in the Air
Hyperstudio & Mauro Pace, Invisible Ballet, ph. Danilo D'Auria

Following its international success with over 6 million visitors worldwide, the Balloon Museum presents Euphoria – Art is in the Air, a large interactive contemporary art exhibition for adults and children. Curated by Valentino Catricalà in collaboration with Antonella Di Lullo, and under the patronage of the Municipality of Rome and the MiC - Ministry of Culture, the exhibition will run from December 20, 2024, to March 30, 2025, at La Nuvola (EUR) in Rome. After its Rome debut, Euphoria – Art is in the Air will travel to Paris, where it will be showcased at the prestigious Grand Palais from June 5 to August 28, 2025. The exhibition features over 20 monumental installations and interactive inflatable artworks, most of which were created specifically for the occasion, by renowned international contemporary artists, including Carsten Höller, Philippe Parreno, Martin Creed, Marta Minujín, Hyperstudio, Rafael Lozano- Hemmer, Ryan Gander, A.A. Murakami, Karina Smigla-Bobinski, Cyril Lancelin, Camille Walala, Philip Colbert, Quiet Ensemble, SpY, Nils Völker, Sun Yitian, MOTOREFISICO, and Alex Schweder. With Euphoria – Art is in the Air, the Balloon Museum takes on a new identity, offering for the first time a journey into contemporary art through inflatable works conceived not only as an artistic medium but also as vessels for interaction and active public engagement.

Every corner of the exhibition is a discovery, a world to explore, where the installations transform La Nuvola's 7,000 square meters into a place of wonder, filled with unexpected shapes, colors, lights, and sounds that stimulate the senses and open up new perspectives. Interaction with the audience lies at the heart of the project: visitors are not mere observers but active participants in an experiential journey that fully immerses them. Inflatable art, with its lightness and versatility, becomes a symbol of art in constant motion, capable of embracing the public in a total experience. "We live in an era where inflatable art is a constant presence in our world, occupying a central role in entertainment, design, and architecture.

Through this exhibition, Inflatable Art and its various interpretations are seen in a new light: that of visual art and its ability to analyze a rapidly changing society" says Valentino Catricalà, the exhibition's curator. "Euphoria – Art is in the Air is an invitation to reflect on the transformative power of art, celebrating the lightness, interaction, and communicative potential of inflatables. It offers a new vision of art and the world around us, where each work invites a dialogue that transcends the material itself, becoming a vehicle for reflection and change" . The Balloon Museum is a unique traveling project of its kind, placing the visitor and their direct experience at the center. Produced by Lux Entertainment, it has so far conceived three other exhibitions named Let's Fly, Pop Air, and EmotionAir, currently touring in Europe, America, and Asia. "Since its inception, the Balloon Museum has embraced the idea that the most authentic and pure elements of childhood can be transformed into powerful means of expression. This vision, as simple as it is revolutionary, was born as a creative response to the changing international social and cultural landscape" says Roberto Fantauzzi, president of Lux Entertainment S.p.A.

"Thanks to its ability to combine art and entertainment, creativity and wonder, the Balloon Museum has offered an unprecedented and memorable experience to millions of visitors. We are happy today to return to Rome, where the project debuted in 2021, with this new exhibition that brings the transformative and imaginative power of contemporary art to adults and children" .

The stars of the Euphoяia – Art is in the Air exhibition are some of the most prominent names in international contemporary art, each interpreting inflatable art through their distinctive style and creative vision. The exhibition unfolds in a series of dreamlike and surreal environments, featuring geometric labyrinths and inflatable architectures to explore, kinetic and sound-activated works, rolling spheres, and balloons floating in the air. Carsten Höller has created a psychedelic Light Wall—comprising 1,152 light bulbs that illuminate simultaneously, accompanied by a stereo signal—emitting luminous pulses triggered by the presence of visitors. The installation invites participants to engage with a new sensory and visual perception of space.... read the rest of the article»

Philippe Parreno presents two installations, Speech Bubbles and My Room is Another Fish Bowl, which explore air as an element of transformation. Speech Bubbles consists of hundreds of orange balloons floating on the ceiling, interacting with light and shadow. Resembling comic speech bubbles, these balloons evoke a suspended dialogue, encouraging visitors to reflect on the nature of communication. In My Room is Another Fish Bowl, a variety of fish-shaped balloons move freely through the space, propelled by air currents generated by the audience's movement, offering a new perspective on the subject-object dynamic of observation.

Martin Creed's Work No. 3883: Half the Air in a Given Space is one of his most iconic works, examining the relationship between space, matter, and perception. This interactive and playful installation comprises hundreds of blue balloons contained within a greenhouse-shaped structure. Visitors are invited to enter and explore this space, experiencing a disorienting sensory journey. Creed's work provokes contemplation on how the absence of spatial coordinates can alter perception and our sense of control within an environment. Marta Minujín invites the audience into Sculpture of Dreams, a towering inflatable sculpture nine meters high. Featuring vibrant colors and the sounds of Argentinian birdsong, the piece creates a multisensory environment offering a moment of peace, beauty, and vitality.

The Italian collective Hyperstudio presents three participatory works dedicated to the essence of air and movement. Hyperlove immerses spectators in a surreal, dreamlike environment, evoking a deep connection between earth and sky. Visitors are invited to enter a pool of red spheres and interact with their surroundings, becoming integral to the dynamic narrative of the piece. Invisible Ballet, created in collaboration with Mauro Pace, explores the invisible forces shaping our world. This installation features a vortex of shimmering balloons in a mirrored room, creating a mesmerizing, hypnotic visual effect where the balloons appear to blend and disappear into the space.

Inspired by La Notte di San Lorenzo, 10 Agosto recreates a magical setting of twinkling lights and sounds. Here, visitors can gently swing on a series of swings, make a wish, and choose their "star" to send their dreams into the cosmos. Human experience becomes an integral part of the artwork with Pulse Topology by Rafael Lozano- Hemmer: a platform of thousands of suspended lightbulbs that illuminate in sync with the visitors' heartbeats, forming a unique chorus of light and sound. The exhibition continues with Imagining things outside your field of vision (Questions in a world that only wants answers) by Ryan Gander, featuring gigantic rolling spheres that play with unexpected dimensions and perspectives. Each sphere is printed with absurd and provocative questions, inviting visitors to roll them and engage in a dialogue with the artwork, sparking curiosity, laughter, and reflection.

A.A. Murakami immerses visitors in his ephemeral and floating universe with On the Threshold to the House of Eternity, a piece that dissolves the boundaries between the natural, industrial, and technological. Rings of mist, programmed to appear in precise sequences, form and dissipate in the air, weaving through scaffolding and machines. Each smoke ring is a fleeting, living presence, leaving behind trails of mist reminiscent of diffused cloud formations, transforming the atmosphere of the space. Karina Smigla-Bobinski's ADA is a large inflatable sphere studded with charcoal sticks, which floats freely in the space, activated by visitors. As it rolls across the white walls of the room, the sphere creates an ever-evolving, self-generated artwork. Cyril Lancelin transforms the space with his geometric and playful universe.

The installation Crazy Love For Polygons is a shifting labyrinth of large red inflatable shapes, stacked or placed side by side, inviting the audience to navigate an abstract landscape that challenges traditional architecture. Camille Walala, with her unmistakable style of geometric shapes, bold patterns, and vibrant colors, designs a series of inflatable architectural structures for Follow me, I think I know the way. This labyrinth of folded columns, arched passages, hypnotic tunnels, and lopsided towers combines playful exploration with moments of reflection. Philip Colbert brings his most iconic creation, the lobster, to life in an extraordinary inflatable sculpture: Inflatable Lobster King. Blending contemporary art, pop culture, and symbols of consumerism, the work is both accessible and instantly recognizable while carrying a deeply conceptual message.

The collective Quiet Ensemble creates an environment of calm and contemplation with A Quiet Storm. In a darkened space, dozens of soap bubbles float gently, moving to the rhythm of a sound composition by the artistic duo. Filled with white smoke, the bubbles reveal their fragility upon contact with visitors, releasing dense clouds into the air. SpY presents the kinetic installation Ovoids, consisting of eight red ovoids suspended from the ceiling. These objects move in oscillating rotational cycles, tracing hypnotic choreographies. Their perfect geometry evokes the primordial shape of the egg, a symbol of birth and purity, while their motion reflects the steady rhythm of life itself.

Continuing through the exhibition, One Hundred and Twenty by Nils Völker combines everyday materials and technology to create a kinetic artwork that moves according to a programmed choreography.

Equipped with 480 fans that inflate and deflate 120 trash bags, the installation constantly transforms its shape, mimicking an organic wave-like motion. Sun Yitian presents Let Me Hold You, an installation that recreates life-sized inflatable toys depicted in the artist's paintings. Among them is a cactus, which transforms from a dangerous, untouchable object into a smooth, spike-free balloon ready to embrace the audience. As the title suggests, the piece thrives on the interaction between the represented object and the viewer, inviting reflection on the theme of acceptance and welcome.

With Swing, MOTOREFISICO offers an engaging experience that invites visitors to interact with the artwork. Composed of a series of suspended spheres that bounce and rotate in space like a vortex, this playful and dynamic environment transforms active audience participation into a collective dance. The installation explores the delicate balance between trust, movement, and the joyful unpredictability of human interaction. Finally, Alex Schweder's The Me That Becomes Through You examines air as a medium for constructing love. The installation takes the form of a large cage housing oversized spheres covered in reflective fabrics and pink synthetic furs that expand and contract, altering and narrowing the space within. The work suggests that love is a negotiation that evolves over time.
