The artist invited to take on the role of intruder for this TERZA RISONANZA is Davide Sgambaro.
His research unfolds in a tension between enchantment and unease: at first glance, his works display a playful and colourful aesthetic, with materials and forms that evoke light-hearted, lively imagery and poetic gestures. However, upon closer and more reflective viewing, the objects, habits, and gestures of a disenchanted youth that emerge in his works, permeated by a tragicomic atmosphere, become subtle keys to exploring generational trauma with delicacy and a mounting sense of astonishment.
Sgambaro will present two works within the interior spaces of the GAM: the first will be located in a passageway on the first floor, while the second will occupy the Sala del Riposo on the second floor.
In addition, during the opening night on 28 October, with a repeat performance on 28 November, Davide Sgambaro will stage a performance in the museum's outdoor areas, engaging with its distinctive architecture.
Davide Sgambaro (Padua, 1989) studied at the IUAV University of Venice and the ENSBA in Paris. He lives and works in Turin. He is one of the founders and supporters of AWI Art Workers Italia. His artistic practice restores irreverent dynamics of resistance in response to generational paradoxes within the social order. He has collaborated with public and private institutions such as MAMbo, Bologna; La Quadriennale di Roma; ZERO..., Milan; LOCALEDUE, Bologna; Gelateria Sogni di Ghiaccio, Bologna; Galerie Alberta Pane, Paris, Venice; Galleria Fuoricampo, Siena; Almanac Inn, Turin; Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice; Fondazione Spinola Banna per l'Arte, Turin; Castello di Rivoli, Turin; Manifattura Tabacchi, Florence; Klemm's Gallery, Berlin; Musei Civici di Spoleto; GAM Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Turin; Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Cologne and Paris; TOAST Project, Florence. He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation scholarship, New York (2023-2024). His works are part of institutional collections such as the Fondazione CRT Arte: Galleria d'Arte Moderna and Castello di Rivoli, Turin; Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice; MAMbo, Bologna.
The Intruder (in Italian, Intruso) is an artist or curator invited to each Risonanza to enter into dialogue with the exhibitions and collections of the GAM. Their "intrusion" plays a pivotal role in each reorganisation of the collections, reactivating interpretative trajectories in motion and unsettling linear or reassuring chronological paths. It is an invitation to develop a counterpoint vision while simultaneously supporting the museum's curatorial structure. When we speak of intrusion, we refer to a deliberately disruptive practice, where someone or something inserts itself forcefully into a system with its own equilibrium. This figure is destined to introduce stumbling blocks into the museum's reassuring layout, to surprise with unexpected arrangements and offer unforeseen insights within the programme and curatorial display.
The Intruder is thus invited to each exhibition season to disrupt and recompose the museum's spaces with unexpected visual logics, to reopen and reset the spatial and temporal relationships within the otherwise 'frozen' world of the institution. The notion of conservation is thereby reset, brought as close as possible to its opposite – far removed from the idea of closure or immobility – yet still firmly within the framework of the museum.... read the rest of the article»
