On Saturday, October 5, 2024, LABS Contemporary Art is pleased to present Tra Loro (Between Them), a two-person exhibition by Spanish artists Elvira Amor and Julia Huete, curated by Cecilia Canziani. The project features a selection of new, site-specific works.
The exhibition brings together the work of two artists: Elvira Amor and Julia Huete. Two voices that, while sharing a focus on abstraction, engage in a dialogue through distinct artistic languages. Julia Huete's work stands out for its ability to question the space of painting. Her approach is often conceptual and reflective, exploring painting through other media. Elvira Amor, on the other hand, explores painting in a more instinctive manner, with a fusion of gesture and color that emerges in both her canvases and her sculptural interventions. Her brushstroke is pure visual joy, expressed with strength and freedom. Both artists share an approach to painting that extends beyond the canvas, incorporating the environment and sculpture. However, their practices remain distinct: Huete explores simple, repetitive forms, diaphanous like flowers or droplets, while Amor works with painting in a more fluid way, expanding until it spills beyond the canvas' boundaries. In this exhibition, the gallery becomes a fluid space. Elvira Amor creates a mural painting that combines gesture and mark-making, accompanied by a metal sculpture that breaks the frontal plane, suggesting new points of view. Julia Huete, on the other hand, presents a large canvas with stitched forms that gain volume and interact with the surrounding space. These interventions, monumental yet portable, reconfigurable and flexible, reflect the impermanence and joy of creation, common characteristics shared by the two artists and central to the exhibition.
Elvira Amor
(b. 1982, Madrid). Lives and works in Madrid.
After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain, she embarked on extended stays during which she developed a particular interest in drawing and non-Western traditional techniques. Her study of forms and colors is expressed through fluid contours. In her paintings, Elvira Amor seeks a pre-verbal language, while at the same time approaching themes of abstract painting.
Julia Huete
(b. 1990, Ourense). Lives and works in Madrid.
She studied Art History at the Faculty of Pontevedra, with exchanges at the University of Porto (Portugal) and Guadalajara, Jalisco (Mexico). Her research explores the relationship between words, art, and poetry using various techniques and media (textiles, collage, drawing, painting, and sculpture), always seeking to interpret them as a language. The comparative study of key concepts in poetic and pictorial discourse is a constant in her work. Her practice revolves around the essential nature of poetic language, while the visual aspect pushes toward a deeper understanding of the purest elements of painting and drawing.
