Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera: one of the most overwhelming stories of love and passion in the entire history of art.
In Padua, at the Altinate San Gaetano Cultural Center, from 14 February to 4 June 2023, a large, choral exhibition tells the story of the two Mexican artists, who have risen to legends on a global level. Padua will be the only Italian stage of a historic world tour.
Promoted by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Padua, the exhibition is organized by the Vergel Foundation, MondoMostre and Skira, in collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL), with the curatorship of Daniela Ferretti.
The fundamental nucleus of the works comes from the famous US collection of Jacques and Natasha Gelman, he a successful director and refined collector, she who, after his death, continues, with brilliant competence, to enrich the collection, according to the motto - as she recalls in his essay in the catalog Daniela Ferretti - "Now I have to work for two".
The spouses, who even in their collection counted on the best of contemporary European art, from Balthus, to Chagall, Giacometti, Matisse, Picasso, to the young Bacon, had a particularly intense relationship with the two Mexican artists, by whom they also had their portraits . Thus, the various fundamental works of Frida entered their collection, including her most famous self-portraits, and of Diego, present in the exhibition.
