From September 28 to October 27, 2024 Triennale Milano is presenting Le stelle per te, dentro (Stars for You, Within), a new installation conceived by Gianni Politi (Rome 1986) specially for the Triennale spaces, in which novel works dialog with earlier series. The show is curated by Damiano Gullì, Curator for Contemporary Art and for the Triennale Public Program.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by the depiction of the artist's inner thinking through figures of stars and galaxies, autonomous and constantly expanding bodies that he uses both to navigate his inner life and to steer his artistic choices.
The star of the show is the large canvas I giorni dei pentimenti (Days of Pentiments), which features his father's face, an image that has accompanied his pictorial research for over a decade. Since 2012, in fact, Gianni Politi has repeatedly represented the same subject – an image he happened to see in a work by Gaetano Gandolfi, Studio per un uomo con la barba (Study for a Bearded Man), in which the man's face is identical to that of Politi's father. Initially this was a way of mastering the technique of oil painting, subsequently becoming a means of constantly reflecting on painterly practice.
This main work also sprang from a later project undertaken by Gianni Politi, which, starting from 2021, saw him transforming an endless series of identical faces into one large painting, thus incorporating in a single work all the aesthetic experiences deriving from the repetition of the same image.
Politi's practice oscillates between figuration and abstraction, through a series of processes in which each language is completed, nourished, and given meaning by the other. This oscillation, which is almost contrapuntal, is also represented in the exhibition by a series of abstract paintings deriving from the assembly and juxtaposition of earlier colored canvases – a practice often adopted by the artist.
The idea of transformation, of contemplation, of pausing, and of a certain sacredness that comes from the space – in which the principal canvas rises up as if mounted in an apse – is created by the introduction of benches and sculptures, characterized by zoomorphic elements reminiscent of frogs: amphibians that in many cultures symbolize both the concept of metamorphosis and that of crossing the threshold between different worlds.
The show seeks to answer a question that is as simple as it is profound: Can an artist always paint the same picture, even by changing it every time? Since Politi has worked for years on the same portrait, which he initially intended to reproduce in a small format, but steadily increased in size until the canvases became enormous, the series of figurative paintings was gradually complemented by his more abstract work.
Gianni Politi's poetics pivots on the concepts of life, death, memory and rebirth; it is expressed through classic materials, following the Italian painting tradition.
The exhibition is part of a program launched some years ago by Triennale Milano to promote and enhance the Italian art scene. Curated by Damiano Gullì, it has featured talks and exhibitions involving female and male artists of different generations – from Corrado Levi to Lisa Ponti, Mariella Bettineschi and Marcello Maloberti, from Anna Franceschini to Lorenzo Vitturi, Alice Ronchi and Luca Staccioli, from Francesco Vezzoli to Nico Vascellari – all of whom possess the signal capacity to move freely between different disciplines, media and techniques.
