Human Borders | Passepartout Photo Prize

The photography exhibition "Human Borders" will be held at 28 Piazza di Pietra Fine Art Gallery in Rome from 14th September to 5th October. The exhibition highlights the best talents discovered among over 500 applications of the Passepartout Photo Prize from all over the world in 2023. The winners of the sixth and seventh editions of the competition with their works on display are Gloria Oyarzabal with "USUS FRUCTUS ABUSUS" and Valerio Geraci with "American Eden." The exhibition also includes selected works by Evan Hume, oh_x_d (Camille Reynders), Henry Schulz, Anton Surov, Zoe Ferrara, and XiangFeiTian.
The group exhibition is curated by Roberta Fuorvia, who explains: "It is fascinating to be able to discuss boundaries, understanding the term in a positive sense. Although they are usually perceived as something negative, boundaries can represent opportunities for definition and discovery.
Martin Heidegger argued that a space is something that is 'cleared,' made free, within a boundary. A boundary is not simply the point where something ends, but, as the Greeks observed, it is the place where something begins to exist. Knowing how to navigate within one's own boundaries or those of photography means understanding a context in relation to oneself, situated within that context.
Our space interacts with others, especially with those who are 'close' to us — as Perec reminds us. To realize this, it is necessary to have directed attention, to observe the surrounding world and avoid the feeling of shame for the nothingness that surprises us, preventing us from truly seeing.
In contemporary photography, boundaries are not limits, but starting points for new creative possibilities. And it is in this way that boundaries in photography become catalysts for innovation and creativity."
ABOUT PASSEPARTOUT PHOTO PRIZE
Passepartout Photo Prize is an open-theme contest that aims to support the development of emerging artists. Not only does this biannual contest provide monetary awards, but winners receive various exposure through on-site exhibitions, publications, features in various magazines, online galleries, and more. The jury consists of photographers, editors, gallerists, curators and educators.
The artistic director Olmo Amato described, "At a time in history when most photographic images created digitally remain in the virtual realm, we felt the need to create a contest that would give visibility to the authors with a real exhibition. A physical gallery where we could observe the photographs not as pixels but as printed images and art objects."
This growing contest aspires to become more than just a contest - to create a hub for fine art photographers to be inspired and gain experiences in the art business. The call for Passepartout Photo Prize 9th edition is open.
