
From 18 February to 21 May 2023, the Orangerie of the Villa Reale in Monza hosts the exhibition I Macchiaioli e l’invenzione del Plein air tra Francia e Italia, which traces the events of one of the most important artistic movements on the Italian cultural scene, which developed in the second half of the 19th century, who with his avant-garde pictorial research in many respects anticipated, with surprising modernity, the results subsequently proposed by the French Impressionists.
The exhibition, curated by Simona Bartolena, produced and created by ViDi cultural, in collaboration with the Villa Reale and Monza Park Consortium and with the Municipality of Monza, with the contribution of BPER Banca, Trenord travel partner, analyzes the Macchiaioli revolution at within a European context, focusing on the technical innovations that the fathers of en plein air art developed in relation to the theme of landscape, genre and historical painting.
The exhibition presents 90 works, from private collections, but also from some important institutions such as the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, Palazzo Foresti in Carpi, the Cariparma Foundation in Parma, the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan, by authors such as Telemaco Signorini, Giovanni Fattori, Giuseppe Abbati, Silvestro Lega, Vincenzo Cabianca, Raffaello Sernesi, Odoardo Borrani, all protagonists of the evolution of this movement, fundamental for the birth of modern Italian painting, starting from their relationship with the scene European, in particular, with the French one.
