After 25 years of intense research, collection and archiving of the work of Emilio Scanavino, scrupulously carried out by the Associazione Amici dell'Archivio Scanavino with the aim of continuing the historical work, preservation and enhancement of the artist's legacy, the Fondazione Emilio Scanavino foundation is born in Milan.
And it is precisely with a view to promoting his work that from April 4 to June 22, 2025, the Fondazione presents its first initiative: the exhibition Les Monstres Amis. Emilio Scanavino e la X Triennale, curated by Michel Gauthier and Marco Scotini, which revisits a foundational moment in the history of art and design. The exhibition focuses on the participation of Scanavino and other prominent artists of the time in the Milan Triennial X of 1954, devoting particular attention to the ceramics section, an important occasion of dialogue between art and industrial design.
Les Monstres Amis recreates the ambience of the Triennal's ceramics hall, which in 1954 housed works created in Albisola the previous summer by artists such as Enrico Baj, Sergio Dangelo, Corneille, Asger Jorn, Roberto Matta, Lucio Fontana and Emilio Scanavino himself, within a setting curated by Joe Colombo.
The section, set within a context dedicated to industrial design and functionalism, aimed to challenge the dominance of the latter with a project that anticipated the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus, an idea that would later evolve into the Situationist International.
Accompanying the exhibition is a catalog published by Dario Cimorelli Editore – with contributions by the two curators Michel Gautier and Marco Scotini and by Luca Bochicchio, Lisa Hockermeyer and Stefano Setti – that delves into the historical, artistic and theoretical context of the 1954 Triennial and the crucial role of Emilio Scanavino in that era.
