The ninth edition of the PhotoVogue Festival, the world's first festival dedicated to conscious fashion photography, opens to the public until March 9 in the spaces of BASE Milano. The free event features four days full of exhibitions, talks, thematic panels and digital showcases, transforming BASE Milano into an inclusive platform for dialogue and reflection.
This year's theme, "The Tree of Life: A Love Letter to Nature," celebrates the resilience, interconnectedness and beauty of the natural world while addressing pressing global challenges related to the environment and sustainability. Guided by the concept of kinship - the interconnectedness of all living things - the ninth edition of the Festival reimagines human relationships with animals, plants and the planet. Through diverse voices and compelling narratives, it underscores the urgency of addressing climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental exploitation. More than a celebration of photography, it is a rallying cry for collective responsibility and positive change.
Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with a global community of photographers, artists, creatives, experts and representatives of organizations committed to environmental protection and promoting sustainability, such as Richard Mosse, Ami Vitale, John Hausdoerffer, Gavin Van Horn, Alice Aedy, John Steele, Aditi Mayer, Willow Defebaugh, Yael Martinez and Elizaveta Porodina.
«Over the years, the PhotoVogue Festival has become an international benchmark for conscious photography, combining art and social engagement. Each edition has brought extraordinary voices to light, providing a platform for emerging talents and connecting them with internationally renowned editors, curators and artists. The festival's success lies in its ability to create connections and generate global dialogue on the most pressing issues of our time. This edition aims to continue in this vein, exploring our connection with nature and the importance of collective action to protect it. I firmly believe that images have the power to change perspectives and trigger real transformations, and this is precisely what the PhotoVogue Festival aims to do» says Alessia Glaviano, Head of Global PhotoVogue and Festival Director.
«The PhotoVogue platform provides a greatly needed home space for the global community of photographic practitioners, thinkers, leaders, and students, in the constantly changing landscape formed in the interstices between documentary and art photography. It's crucial that there's a meeting for members of this community to come together, meet and hear each other, and share imagery and ideas. I am extremely excited to participate in this year's PhotoVogue Festival, where I'll present my own thinking behind my recent work in the Amazon Rainforest. It's more important than ever, now, that photographers and storytellers find a way to communicate the urgent existential narratives that we face with manmade global heating and climate change — stories that are inherently hard to describe, but couldn't be more pressing» declares Richard Mosse, Photographer.
«The future of our planet is in our hands, and we cannot afford to feel overwhelmed or hope that someone else will address the problem. At Vital Impacts, we harness the power of art and storytelling to support community-based conservation efforts and elevate visual journalists who are dedicated to sharing impactful environmental narratives. By collaborating with some of the world's most influential environmental photographers and mentoring the next generation of global environmental storytellers, we connect science and narratives to highlight the interconnectedness of individual well-being and environmental health» argues Ami Vitale, Photojournalist and Founder of Vital Impacts.
«It is an honor to participate in this year's PhotoVogue Festival and explore our kinships with other-than-human beings—particularly how these evolutionary and everyday relationships can be creatively represented through visual arts. When so many of us feel uprooted or unrooted, turning our attention toward our earthly companions offers ways to connect deeply to our places, revitalize a sense of creaturely belonging, expand our empathic imaginations, and embrace the collective wonders of being human in a more-than-human world» Gavin Van Horn, Executive Editor of Humans & Nature Press Books and co-editor, with John Hausdoerffer and Robin Wall Kimmer, of the award-winning book series Kinship: Belonging in a World of Relations.
«PhotoVogue is a nurturing and veritable platform for everyone who cares about images and their transformative power in society. The talks, exhibitions, and programming connect the medium of photography with our contemporary moment» Azu Nwagbogu Founder and Director of African Artists' Foundation
Five exhibitions will explore the theme and the public can visit during the festival days:
The Tree of Life: A Love Letter to Nature - L'albero della vita: una lettera d'amore alla natura presents the works of 50 artists, selected through a global open call. Their works serve as visual tributes to nature, highlighting the fragility and enduring beauty of life on Earth;
Latin American Panorama - Panorama dell'America Latina celebrating diverse artistic voices from Latin America, showcasing the works of more than 40 artists selected through a regional open call, that explore themes of identity, culture, and environmental interdependence;
In Vogue with Nature sheds light on the relationship between fashion and nature through a series of iconic covers from the world editions of Vogue;
Seeds of Knowledge - Semi di conoscenza a curated collection of books and magazines offers audiences deeper insights into the festival's theme;
The Tree of Change - L'albero del cambiamento a series of slideshows, videos, and contributions from organizations dedicated to environmental advocacy.
The program is also enhanced by a series of talks such as the Stories Behind the Images: thematic panels in which artists will present their work in six-minute sessions, delving into their creative processes.
The PhotoVogue Festival is co-curated by Caterina De Biasio (Visual Editor, PhotoVogue) and Daniel Rodríguez Gordillo (Senior Manager, Education & Community Initiatives, Condé Nast).
The event is part of the programme of BASE Milano: a centre for cultural production open to the city, created by the redevelopment of industrial spaces in the former Ansaldo factory in the Tortona district of the city. Here, research, experimentation and social planning coexist with the production and co-production of cultural and entertainment initiatives, including artists' residencies, design and art festivals, and music events.
Il PhotoVogue Festival 2025 è organizzato con il patrocinio del Comune di Milano e reso possibile grazie ai partner:
AUDI, the House of the four rings, continues its collaboration with Vogue Italia by confirming itself as the Main Partner of PhotoVogue Festival for the ninth consecutive year.
Davines, an Italian company that promotes beauty that not only enhances the outward appearance, but also respects and cares for nature and animal life, is a partner of the PhotoVogue Festival, with which it shares values such as ethics and sustainability. Davines is present at the PhotoVogue Festival with artist Xavi Bou, who will present in the exhibition a triptych dedicated to the movement of Vaux's swifts, a particular type of birds that, with their fluid and harmonious trajectories, evoke the movement of hair, a symbol of the beauty and care that the company dedicates to its products.
Regione Puglia is supporting PhotoVogue Festival with a project articulated between video and photography: three videos are featured in the exhibition, each dedicated to one of the Apulian excellences selected to represent the region: illustrator Agostino Iacurci, entrepreneur and architect Rosanna Venezia, and the tailoring brand Tagliatore, an emblem of Apulian textile tradition. Leading this exploration is Isabella Petrosillo, a young content creator and stylist from Puglia, who takes the viewer on a journey through innovative realities, craft workshops and iconic places in Puglia. The videos are directed by Ermanno Menini, with photography direction by Alessandro Tempestini. The images on display, on the other hand, are taken by photographer Nicolò Rinaldi.
Maison Senato, the prestigious new hospitality project of Diomede srl, is present at PhotoVogue Festival with an installation previewing its cultural manifesto. Inside you can see a series of photographs-already on display at Maison Senato-created by artists in collaboration with Vital Impacts, a nonprofit organization founded by Ami Vitale and Eileen Mignoni that uses photography as a means to support environmental conservation. At the PhotoVogue Festival, Vital Impacts is also part of the exhibition "The Tree of Change - The Tree of Change" with a dedicated slideshow, which through powerful images tells of the urgency of taking action for the future of the environment.
Founded in 2008 by the Pictet Group, the Prix Pictet sees photography-in all its genres-as a powerful medium for drawing global attention to critical sustainability issues, particularly those concerning the environment. Over its ten cycles, the prize has spotlighted photographers whose work not only displays artistic excellence but also conveys urgent narratives about the fragile state of our planet. Prix Pictet supports the ninth edition of PhotoVogue Festival with which it shares common goals and mission. During the festival there will be a conversation between Alessia Glaviano, Head of Global PhotoVogue and Isabelle von Ribbentrop, Executive Director of Prix Pictet.
