Riccardo Schweizer. 100 Years of Colour, Form and Freedom

One hundred years after his birth, Mart is paying tribute to Riccardo Schweizer, a painter, sculptor, architect and designer from Trentino. Although he was influenced by Cubism and Surrealism, he always stayed faithful to his own personal poetics, creating works with vibrant colours and dynamic forms. The exhibition explores his creative universe through a themed itinerary that highlights the various areas of his work, emphasising his contribution to the 20th-century artistic scene and his connection with his birthplace.

From 29 November to 6 April, a major retrospective at Palazzo delle Albere is celebrating one of the most versatile and original personalities on the Trentino art scene in the second half of the 20th century: Riccardo Schweizer.

Schweizer was born in the Primiero mountains in 1925. A free spirit with an inquiring mind, he combined his experiences abroad with his Alpine roots, rubbing shoulders with the great masters of his time, from Pablo Picasso to Le Corbusier. After his beginnings in figurative art in the 1940s, focussing consistently on everyday reality and the Trentino landscape, the artist took his research further into line and colour. This led him to become involved with the European artistic avant-garde of the 1950s and 1960s.

A painter, sculptor, architect, designer, decorator and ceramist, he epitomised the modern artist, someone who could work in diverse artistic languages and move between seemingly distant worlds, local roots and international horizons.

The exhibition is being held in the Renaissance rooms of what was once the Mart’s first home. Organised by themes and in chronological order, it invites visitors to explore the different areas of Schweizer’s work: painting, applied arts, architectural design and collaborations with the world of design and craftsmanship.

The 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth is an opportunity to present an extensive collection of works from public and private collections: paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, architectural designs and furnishings, documenting the extraordinary variety of Schweizer’s work. The exhibition is divided into themed sections so that visitors can follow the evolution of Schweizer’s artistic language, from black and white drawings to colourful paintings of women, a crucial subject in his imagery, graphic works and decorative inventions designed for public spaces, hotels and domestic environments. A special focus is placed on his work as a designer and architect, a field in which the artist was able to combine modern aesthetics with a craftsman’s knowledge of materials, creating refined and elegant furnishings and objects.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue that reconstructs the complexity of this artist, who continually innovated his work and interpreted Trentino’s cultural tradition in a contemporary key.

With this exhibition, Mart reaffirms its commitment to promoting local artists, confirming its role as a museum of reference for research, conservation and promotion of Trentino’s cultural heritage. The exhibition dedicated to Riccardo Schweizer is part of a broader museum project focussed on rediscovering personalities who could engage with the national and international art scene while still maintaining local connections.
