Vincenzo Scolamiero. Of silence and transparency

The Palazzo Pubblico Museum - Magazzini del Sale di Siena from 27 November to 9 January 2022 will host a personal exhibition by Vincenzo Scolamiero entitled Del silence and transparency. Under the medieval vaults, 60 large canvases, works on paper, artist's books, videos and other materials will alternate.

The dialogue between painting, music and poetry boasts a solid Italian tradition. Scores, antiphonaries, notes and staves have always appeared in paintings, from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century; and countless artists, over time, have been musicians and poets, composers or performers, in a constant dialogue that only at the beginning of the last century is transformed into the new language of abstraction, when painting finds the reason for abandon the forms of reality, and with them mimesis.

Yet among the vast brick rooms, a splendid example of the recovery of public spaces forgotten until half a century ago, about sixty works are exhibited in which the relationship between the three arts does not come from tradition, nor draws on obvious reciprocity, but establishes a very vital and new expressive practice.

The protagonists of Vincenzo Scolamiero's solo show, which already from the title Of Silence and Transparency argues the spirit that animates it in a beautiful archaic form, are some recent cycles of large canvases and artist notebooks. Works carried out with various pigments, inks, inks and glittering metallic powders, to compose solid and flat shapes, color plates and terrestrial folds, cut by the light and disrupted by an ancestral wind.

The central theme is, of course, the relationship with music and poetry, and celebrates the enchantment that the Roman artist felt in meeting some great contemporary composers - among others, Birtwistle, Ades, Reich, Adams and certain minimalist or liturgical music, in addition to his beloved Luigi Nono, to whom a section is dedicated - and in the one with the many dear poets, to which are added some recent discoveries, such as the lyrics of the Nobel laureate Louise Glück. But for Scolamiero music and poetry are neither echoes nor evocations of atmospheres. The relationship is necessary and reciprocal: his painting feeds on them, draws meaning from them and restores their image, in a fluidity of relationships and references that seeks an eternal and unchangeable thread between the arts.... read the rest of the article»

Each powerful new suggestion only enhances forms and spaces already sedimented, in Scolamiero's figurative research, whether it is the primeval force of Birtwistle's compositions that upset the clods and painted papers like an earthquake, or the obsessive cyclical nature of the medieval antiphon that dismisses the rhythm of some of his figurative series by a whisker, or the telluric echo of the lines of Louise Glück which helps the artist to explore the depths of the shadow.

But a third protagonist lights up the canvases on display. If poetry and music feed the imagination and direct forms, a recent material experimentation orients the light, to quote Leonardo, and at the same time restores concreteness and truth to the ideal tension: with the very original use of precious lamellar powders, the same ones used in the restoration and gilding laboratories, Scolamiero accumulates more space, pushes towards the limit level of the paintings with large luminescent layers - declining pink gold, orange and gray - that bend like precious plates under a mysterious force. Gold invades everything, from bright surfaces to the darkest cavities, lights up the shadows and shines in the colors. And it seems, here on the ground floor of the Palazzo Pubblico, to want to pay homage to the illustrious Sienese school that from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance taught generations of great artists to gently spread the golden leaf on the wooden backgrounds, then to polish and punch it for the halos, the hems of the mantles, frames and wings of angels.

The canvases are complemented by the production of three cycles of artist's books, another rare model of a mixture of musical or poetic lexicon and figurative expression. The specimens are the result of the collaboration with the poet Milo De Angelis - from whom 12 unique works were created - and with the composer Silvia Colasanti, from the exchange with which seven of the score / painting type came out.

A third artist's book was commissioned by the United Federation of Italian Writers for the seventh centenary of the death of Dante Alighieri. It is another of the special expressive experiments in which Scolamiero lets the flow of fascination raised by Dante's great poetry flow and flow, and then channel it into the tight and rigorous process of artistic creation.

The exhibition is presented by the Municipality of Siena, conceived and curated the inner room - Siena, and is organized in collaboration with the Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena, the Galleria Edieuropa QUI contemporary art in Rome, and with the patronage of the Academy of Fine Arts. of Rome and the Roberto Bilotti Ruggi d'Aragona Museum of Contemporary Art in Rende (CS).

On the occasion of the exhibition, the catalog will be available with texts by art historians Francesca Bottari, Tiziana D’Acchille, Giuliana Stella, published by De Luca Editori d’Arte in Rome.

In collaboration with the Accademia Musicale Chigiana di Siena, a selection of plates from the book / opera "Every thing has said goodbye to everything", created with the composer Silvia Colasanti, will be exhibited in the premises of the Chigiana Art Café, in Via di Città , 89, Siena.
