Supernova presents Lungo il peso che ho perduto, a solo exhibition by Wang Yuxiang featuring new and previously unseen works by the artist, curated by Niccolò Giacomazzi. The opening will take place on Monday, September 15, 2025, at Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere 1a, Rome. The exhibition will remain open until October 27, 2025.
The project builds its visual research around the physical phenomena of alternation, flow, and evaporation within the contemporary urban space, focusing on the role of water molecules in constant transformation, in relation to movement and the complex interactions among city residents. This interest intersects with the artist's fascination with the theory of humors and the dialectical relationship between the human body and humidity levels in traditional Chinese medicine. The works presented by Wang Yuxiang have been conceived site-specifically for Supernova, investigating the dialogue between fullness and void in architecture, between temperature and humidity.
The artist's encounter with everyday life sparked his interest in a concept that finds one of its fullest expressions in the Chinese language: Yuanfen. The word Yuanfen, often translated as "having fate without predestination," conveys the idea of serendipitous encounters and coincidences tied to an inexplicable past and future, describing the destiny and circumstances that bring people together. At first glance, it can be linked to notions of cause and effect, relationship, and emotion, yet beneath it lie many preconditions—including the will of heaven, destiny, practice, and opportunity. In philosophical terms, it could be described as necessity within chance, though this definition only partly captures its meaning: destiny is not only predestined in a past life but also cultivated and created in the future. Coincidences exist, but so do deep connections and human warmth. It is difficult to discern what belongs to divine will and what to human action, yet both are essential. This notion helps articulate the bond between humidity, human condition, and the theme of encounter, serving as the poetic key to the entire project.
Wang spent the entire month of June 2025 at the Fonderia Artistica Battaglia in Milan, producing one of the works on display, following the artist residency invitation he received. "Bronze casting, at the core of this process, requires collaboration and mutual listening with the master founders," says Wang. "It is a technique that compels one to distill the work down to its most essential form, respecting materiality, labor, and the logic of nature. It is a path that unites passion, alchemy, temperature, and ethics, transforming thought into living matter."
Lungo il peso che ho perduto weaves a narrative where destiny becomes an invisible thread among contemporary existences, traversing memory, transformation, and interdependence.
Bio
Wang Yuxiang was born in Anhui, China, in 1997. He lives and works in Rome.
His practice focuses on merging Mediterranean and Eastern culture through the use of simple materials and a concise visual language, shaped by both his travels and his birthplace. Time, history, and memory are the conceptual themes guiding his work. The artist distances himself from the places he engages with, analyzing their particularities and restoring them through the visual architecture of site-specific interventions. Influenced by deconstructivism, he carries out preliminary investigations and research on the creative environment before starting his work, later intervening locally. In this context, the selection and arrangement of materials intertwine, establishing a coherent minimalist dialectic on the weight of historical memory and the questioning of cumbersome yet deeply rooted cultural imagery. His research revolves around unveiling the hidden values of the landscape within a framework of deconstruction.
