May 5th: Sunday at the Museum
It starts on Sunday, May 5th, with the appointment with "Sunday at the Museum," the initiative of the Ministry of Culture that allows free entry, every first Sunday of the month, to state museums and archaeological parks. Visits will take place during regular opening hours, with reservation access where required. The complete and up-to-date list of all participating venues is available on the Ministry of Culture's website.
Among the numerous open and freely accessible venues, one of the most prestigious is certainly the National Gallery of the Marche. Sunday, May 5th, will also be the last day to visit "The other collection - Stories and works from the deposits of the National Gallery of the Marche," the beautiful exhibition curated by Luigi Gallo, Valentina Catalucci, and Andrea Bernardini set up in the spaces on the ground floor of Palazzo Ducale. The exhibition presents to the public a selection of 60 lesser-known works, which in some cases turn out to be true art epiphanies, by - among others - Antonio Cimatori, Francesco Mancini, Giovanni Andrea Lazzarini, Pier Leone Ghezzi, Alessandro Gallucci, Vincenzo Nini, Domenico Rosselli, Simone Cantarini, Giovan Francesco Guerrieri, Francesco Podesti, Adolfo De Carolis.

The initiative also includes the various venues of the Gallerie d'Italia, the museum hub of Intesa Sanpaolo. Sunday, May 5th, like every first Sunday of the month, free admission for all visitors. The same free opening modalities also apply to the Ivan Bruschi Antique Museum House in Arezzo. The Gallery of Palazzo degli Alberti in Prato is open every Sunday and on holidays, always with free admission.
At the Gallerie d'Italia in Milan, you can immerse yourself in the permanent collection, with paths that enhance works from the 19th and 20th centuries.
From Antonio Canova's plaster bas-reliefs, inspired by Homer, Virgil, and Plato, owned by the Cariplo Foundation, to Lombard painting of the 19th century, to Umberto Boccioni's paintings with the masterpiece "Three Women," to the extensive project of the '900 Workshop, dedicated to enhancing the collection of 20th and 21st-century works by Intesa Sanpaolo, a collection that holds significant importance in the Italian collecting panorama for the quality and completeness with which it documents the artistic production of the period.
In Naples, you can admire the new exhibition Velázquez. "A grandiose sign." On display are two masterpieces by Diego Velázquez, the Immaculate Conception and Saint John the Evangelist on the island of Patmos, coming from the National Gallery in London. Cristina Mittermeier, Valle dell'Omo Etiopia, 2023
In Turin, the exhibition "Cristina Mittermeier. The Great Wisdom" curated by Lauren Johnston and in collaboration with National Geographic is open. The exhibition, the first retrospective in Europe dedicated to the photographer, showcases about 90 photographs and provides an overview of Cristina Mittermeier's important research work. Mittermeier, a photographer, marine biologist, and activist, has documented the beauty of our planet over the years, from evolving landscapes and wildlife to the diverse cultures and traditions of people living in symbiosis with nature.
The exhibition "Non ha l'età. The Sanremo Festival in black and white 1951-1976" curated by Aldo Grasso continues until May 12th. The exhibition presents 85 photographs from the Intesa Sanpaolo Publifoto Archive on the Sanremo Festival, the most famous event in Italian music representing an important chapter not only in the history of music and television but also in the social history of the country.
In Vicenza, you can discover the "Fall of the Rebel Angels," the eighteenth-century Venetian sculptural masterpiece, enhanced in the context of the evocative "under a new light" exhibition. In a newly designed adjacent space, visitors are guided to discover the work through new tools such as tactile reproductions (for accessibility to visually impaired people) and an immersive video.
Also available for visit is the scientific and educational path "Clay. Stories of encounters," in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua.
At the Ivan Bruschi Antique Museum House in Arezzo, which houses the eclectic collection of the illustrious Aretine creator of the Antiques Fair, you can admire the new exhibition "Free Manner. Abstract and informal art in the Intesa Sanpaolo collections," organized and promoted by Intesa Sanpaolo, Ivan Bruschi Foundation, and CR Jesi Foundation, in synergy with Gallerie d'Italia. The exhibition, curated by Marco Bazzini, considers the period between the end of World War II and the beginning of the fabulous sixties in Italy.
At the Gallery of Palazzo degli Alberti in Prato, masterpieces by Bellini, Filippo Lippi, Puccio di Simone, and a collection of great identity value for the city are on display, including numerous works from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries from the Florentine area.
The gallery is open every Sunday and on holidays, always with free admission.
Saturday, May 11th, and Sunday, May 12th: Kid Pass Days
The tenth edition of Kid Pass Days, the major event dedicated to families to discover the cultural, historical, artistic, and scientific heritage throughout Italy, is scheduled for Saturday, May 11th, and Sunday, May 12th, 2024. A marathon of 150 in-person events organized simultaneously, in collaboration with 120 museums, cultural spaces, castles, planetariums, archaeological parks, and associations from north to south.
Among the many initiatives, we highlight the one at the GAM in Turin, which on Sunday, May 12th, at 3 pm welcomes families into its galleries offering an activity dedicated to children. The guided tour through the 20th-century collections will allow delving into the museum's work in accessibility and opening up culture to everyone, addressing the widest possible audience in terms of age and abilities. During the practical activity in the Educational Area, children will be invited to create multisensory works inspired by what they experienced during the guided tour. Learn more.

Saturday, May 11th: Saturday Concert at Palazzo Madama
At Palazzo Madama, the Civic Museum of Ancient Art in Turin, the grand exhibition dedicated to Italian Art Nouveau, "Liberty. Torino Capitale," is still ongoing. The exhibition narrates, with around a hundred works, the fundamental role of Turin in the affirmation of Art Nouveau, an art that in the Savoy capital becomes the focal point of a social, architectural, and artistic experience that overwhelms every aspect of life and society, defining an architectural and artistic experience that, starting from Turin's inspirations, spreads worldwide.

A great opportunity to visit the exhibition, which will close on June 10th, could be Saturday, May 11th. The Educational Services of Palazzo Madama present the last of the three concerts scheduled by the music section of the Cavour High School in Turin. The concerts are free admission until seats are filled and will immerse the audience in music produced during the late 18th and 19th centuries, rediscovering chamber music. The program will feature selections from European music, ranging from the Baroque to the 19th century. No reservation service is available.
Saturday, May 18th: International Museum Day
Since 1977, every year on May 18th, International Museum Day is celebrated. This year's theme, "Museums for Education and Research," emphasizes the crucial role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience. This day encourages a more aware, sustainable, and inclusive world.
The initiative is promoted by ICOM (International Council of Museums) and in Italy by the Italian National Committee of ICOM, established on May 17th, 1947, just six months after the formation of the International Council of Museums, which took place during the first General Conference of UNESCO held in Paris in November 1946.
For the occasion, the Mart, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, offers free admission to all its venues: the Mart in Rovereto, the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero, and the Galleria Civica Trento. The Mart in Rovereto is currently hosting the major exhibition "Art and Fascism."

Until September 1st, 2024, the Mart in Rovereto presents the exhibition "Art and Fascism," conceived by Vittorio Sgarbi and curated by Beatrice Avanzi and Daniela Ferrari. The exhibition analyzes the various and complex ways in which the fascist regime influenced Italian figurative production, using the language of art for propagandistic purposes.
The exhibition recalls the main occasions when artists gave voice to the ideology, themes, and myths of fascism through participation in Biennials, Quadrennials, trade union exhibitions, competitions, and public commissions.
Featuring painting, sculpture, documents, and projects, the exhibition path winds through approximately 400 works by artists and architects such as Mario Sironi, Carlo Carrà, Adolfo Wildt, Arturo Martini, Marino Marini, Massimo Campigli, Achille Funi, Fortunato Depero, Tullio Crali, Thayaht, Renato Bertelli, and Renato Guttuso. Saturday, May 18th: Museum Night 2024
In conjunction with the Nuit Européenne Des Musées, Museum Night 2024 returns on Saturday, May 18th. Every year, it takes place on the Saturday evening closest to the International Museum Day (ICOM), so this year the two events happen to coincide. On this occasion, state museums offer an extraordinary evening opening for the symbolic cost of 1 euro. These openings are also accompanied by events, performances, and cultural promotion initiatives organized with the contribution of all arts (theater, music, dance, literature, cinema, etc.).
During Museum Night, non-state or private exhibition venues also organize special openings. This is the case with FMAV Fondazione Modena Arti Visive, which plans an evening opening on Saturday, May 18th, from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
