Umberto Mariani

Umberto Mariani was born in Milan in 1936. He attended the Brera Academy becoming study assistant to his teacher Achille Funi. In the years between 1959 and 1965, Mariani collaborated closely with his master for the creation of numerous and grandiose fresco decorations.
He also collaborates in the realization of the altarpiece of St. Joseph in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome (central altar of the left transept).
Through these experiences he learns the ability to "work in great" capacity used for all the following years. Starting in 1965, he began exhibiting in numerous private galleries both in Italy and abroad.
In the Piombi, the most recent experiences, the artist, preserving the theme most dear to him, that is the drapery, provides a stylized and geometrized idea of this subject. Now it is no longer the sumptuous and redundant quotation of the baroque folds, but more meditated forms suggest a more calm and intimate reading of this theme which without a shadow of a doubt is the most widespread and universally treated in all times in the history of art.
In the Piombi the drapery has lost all veristic form, it has crystallized in straight lines that certainly aim to affirm a more idealistic, more symbolic vision.
