Gabriele Grones is exhibiting at Ca' Pesaro in dialogue with the works in the permanent collection, alongside which his new works, which are an artistic and conceptual elaboration, are displayed. In particular, the artist, using an extremely realistic painting technique on small canvases, places two portraits alongside Medardo Rosso's wax sculptures and Fernand Khnopff's painting The White Mask, extracts and elaborates some details from Joaquìn Sorolla's work Sewing the Sail, takes up Felice Casorati's Le signorine, Umberto Moggioli's paintings Piccolo paesaggio di Burano and Autunno a Treporti, Giorgio Morandi's Vasi e bottiglie and Natura morta and Giovanni Anselmo's sculpture Senza titolo, a famous Arte povera piece.
Grones was chosen by Ca' Pesaro in 2020 for Artverona's Level 0 programme and had already been shortlisted for the Mestre Painting Prize in the same year. The exhibition, curated by Elisabetta Barisoni and Giovanna Nicoletti, continues a tradition, triggered in 1902, of relating the Masters to the new generation of contemporary art, which has also been renewed recently with the exhibition experiences inaugurated in 2019 with Sophie Ko in dialogue with Auguste Rodin's The Thinker and continued in 2020 with Paola Angelini's residency in the rooms of Ca' Pesaro, the outcome of which was presented in 2021 in the Museum's project room.
The paintings were created as a site-specific project for the Museum and offer the visitor a new interpretation of Grones' production and at the same time a new look at the works of the Masters of the Gallery, creating an orchestrated and rhythmic set of relationships, tensions and analogies, iconographic references and shared directions.
