The National Gallery of Umbria is one of the richest collections in Italy with works of international interest. The multiplicity and variety of the artistic testimonies that it preserves range from paintings on wood, on canvas and murals, to wood and stone sculptures, to goldsmiths and fabrics, examples of the artistic production developed between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The prestige of the collection, ordered in a rigorous chronological sequence, is testified by the presence of some masterpieces of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with works by Arnolfo di Cambio, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Duccio di Boninsegna, Gentile da Fabriano, Beato Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli and Piero della Francesca, Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Ample space is reserved for the Umbrian artists Benedetto Bonfigli, Bartolomeo Caporali, Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and in particular for the famous paintings by Perugino, Pintoricchio and their pupils and followers. Some sections, characterized by accurate display solutions, are intended for the masterpieces of the Sienese goldsmith, the traditional "Perugian tablecloths", belonging to the Cagnotti Bellucci and Rocchi collections, the ceramic production of floor tiles of the 15th and 16th centuries and the unprecedented collection of drawings including a precious sanguine study by Federico Barocci. The path continues with an exhaustive selection of pictorial and sculptural testimonies of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, made in Umbria by some protagonists of the time, such as Orazio Gentileschi, Valentin de Boulogne, Pietro da Cortona, Giovan Battista Salvi known as Sassoferrato, Pietro Montanini, Corrado Giaquinto, Francesco Trevisani, Pierre Subleyras, Sebastiano Conca. The exhibition ends with original thematic presentations dedicated to the 19th century Perugian topography and the precious Carattoli collection.
