Picasso. The Metamorphosis of the Figure

Closing the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death, from February 22nd to June 30th, 2024, a major exhibition, curated by Malén Gual, honorary curator of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, along with Ricardo Ostalé, brings over forty works by the Spanish master to the MUDEC, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and sketches from the precious Notebook No. 7, lent for the exhibition by the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation - Casa Natal Museum in Malaga.

"Picasso. The Metamorphosis of the Figure" is an important exhibition project aimed at interpreting Picasso's rich production – from his early works to his later ones – in light of his love for 'primitive' artistic sources, telling the story of this constant intellectual reworking and the artistic legacy of his vision.

Picasso did not consider the art that inspired him as 'primitive'. Instead, it fueled his creative mind with an unstoppable desire to forge new paths. He saw no 'before' or 'after' in art; there was no 'other' or 'different' art – Picasso conceived it as a timeless whole. "There is neither past nor future in art," he loved to emphasize. "If a work of art cannot live always in the present, it has no meaning."

Pablo Picasso always showed deep respect for the artistic expressions of other cultures and eras, understanding and reinventing them more than any other artist of his generation, with the noble purpose of giving impetus and a new path of exploration to universal art.

The exhibition "Picasso. The Metamorphosis of the Figure," produced by 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE and promoted by the Municipality of Milan - Culture, with the contribution of the Deloitte Foundation, Institutional Partner, and with the patronage of the Embassy of Spain in Italy, retraces Picasso's rich production – from his early works to his later ones – in light of his love for 'primitive' artistic sources, telling the story of this constant intellectual reworking and the artistic legacy of his vision through a major exhibition project, with over forty works by the Spanish master, including paintings, sculptures, along with 26 drawings and sketches of preparatory studies, from the precious Notebook No. 7 lent for the exhibition by the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation - Casa Natal Museum in Malaga.... read the rest of the article»

Crucial for this exhibition is the unprecedented collaboration with all the main Spanish museums that hold the most important collections of Picasso's works in his homeland, Spain: first and foremost, the Casa Natal in Malaga, but also the Picasso Museum in Barcelona and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, as well as numerous private collectors.

It is important to introduce the public to how Picasso captured the essence and meaning of African art and incorporated it into his work throughout his life, from 1906 – a crucial year for his production – to his last works in the 1960s. With the return to "primitivism" around 1925, the artist drew inspiration from African examples, as well as from Neolithic and proto-Iberian examples (from pre-Roman Spain), Oceanic art, ancient Egyptian art, and classical Greek art (black-figure vases). Picasso invented transpositions, reshaped figures with disproportionate volumes, in a constant metamorphosis of figures that often had a strong erotic connotation, and that would govern the evolution of his painting and sculpture, especially in moments of personal or social crisis.

The exhibition, curated by Malén Gual, honorary curator of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, along with Ricardo Ostalé, also ideally concludes a long 2023 of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the painter's death with an exhibition that is strongly and intentionally 'Spanish' in the identity of the project but 'universal' in the heart of the artistic vision that Picasso offers to the public.
