We are 150 years from the exhibition in 1874 that marked the birth of Impressionism, and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris is preparing to celebrate the occasion appropriately with the exhibition 'Paris 1874: Inventing Impressionism,' scheduled from March 26 to July 14, 2024. Simultaneously, for this occasion, approximately 180 exceptionally loaned works from the Musee d'Orsay will be on display in 30 French museums.

Even in Rome, a precious loan from the Parisian museum will arrive, starting from March 1st until May 19, 2024. During this period at Villa Medici, visitors will have the opportunity to admire Édouard Manet's painting "Le Citron", created in 1880. This masterpiece will be the highlight of the guided tour at Villa Medici.

Despite its modest dimensions (14 x 22 cm), the painting is one of the most powerful still lifes by the artist, who claimed his ambition to become the 'Saint Francis of still life.' The painter isolated the fruit with its yellow tones on a simple black glazed ceramic saucer, highlighting its essential elements: vibrant color, the texture of the peel, and simplicity."

This will be just a small preview of another highly anticipated exhibition, organized almost simultaneously with the Parisian showcase, from March 30 to July 28, 2024, at the Historical Museum of Infantry. It is the exhibition "Impressionists: The Dawn of Modernity", curated by Vincenzo Sanfo in collaboration with Vittorio Sgarbi.

The exhibition project aims to document the eruption of the Impressionist revolution in Paris, investigating a time span from 1850 to 1915. It has gathered a considerable number of approximately 200 works, showcasing paintings, drawings, watercolors, sculptures, ceramics, and engravings to document the activities of the artists who participated in the eight official "Impressionist" exhibitions. The exhibition pays particular attention to all the techniques they experimented with and utilized.

Aspiring to be perhaps the largest and most comprehensive Impressionist exhibition ever held in Italy, both in terms of the quantity of works and the artists represented, it will feature not only prominent names such as Monet, Degas, Manet, Renoir, Cezanne, Gauguin, Pissarro but also lesser-known figures adhering to the Barbizon School movement, who were the inspirational seeds for the young Impressionists, such as Bracquemond, Guillaumin, Forain, Desboutin, Lepic, and others.

As a testament to the high caliber of the project, the Scientific Committee assembled for the occasion includes top-notch names such as Gilles Chazal, former Director of the Musée du Petit Palais, Member of the école du Louvre, Vittorio Sgarbi, Vincenzo Sanfo, curator of international exhibitions and expert in Impressionism, and Maithe Valles-Bled, former Director of the Musée de Chartres and Musee Paul Valéry.

For those who may not have the opportunity to visit Rome during that period and reside in the north, here's where you can admire some masterpieces by Monet and his contemporaries. Don't forget the grand exhibition currently taking place in Padua at Palazzo Zabarella, titled 'From Monet to Matisse: French Moderns 1850–1950', from which you can get a preview right here.
