It is the American painter who works between Milan and Zurich Annamarie Ho the protagonist of the new edition of Cadogan SOLO, the project of the Milan venue of the English gallery dedicated to the showcase the work of a single artist at a time.
In the space facing Via Bramante this time we find Box Box, a mini-exhibition of two works by the artist, part of the Tute and Home Depot Paintingsseries that conceptually and formally investigate painting without painting.
The series Tute focuses on the themes of sponsorship and branding of Formula One drivers' suits through stitched fabric compositions reminiscent of the hardest abstraction; Home Depot Paintings, on the other hand, referring to the American multinational company that sells tools, building materials, electrical appliances and household products, transforms mass-produced objects into colourful glazed ceramic works.
The title of the project, Box Box, refers to the pit-stop area of Formula One, to a toolbox, and to the exhibition space itself in which the works are displayed.
Annamarie Ho paintlessly paints, forcing content into form and demanding those forms maintain an existence as readable content. She nicks away at hegemonies in international popular cultures and the towering weight of macho grandaddy art. Formula One racing, excursions to home improvement stores, post painterly abstraction, specific objects. Hers is a practice of material transformations and shiftings of scale and tone, carousing as she indicts. Frisking codes of color and material and reclaiming and rerouting the straight line of hard edge composition. Greenberg's "favored openness or clarity" is exposed and muddied, yet Ho's visual impact is one of vigor and lustiness. Mitchell Anderson
Active since 1980, Cadogan Gallery has always distinguished itself through its careful support of the work of emerging, mid-career, established or critically acclaimed artists, and also by an unwavering commitment towards cultivating relationships with generations of collectors and artists for over 40 years. Alongside its first gallery in South Kensington, London, and a temporary space for special projects in Hampshire, Cadogan has now added an international perspective to its exhibition programme by opening its first foreign venue in Milan. Since the spring of 2023, in a bright space in the Milanese fashion, with an approach focused on highlighting individual artists and a clear aesthetic identity, the new space is a perfect place to exhibit not only works by artists who have grown with the gallery, but also an emerging new generation.
